A moment of music to enjoy

If you enjoy hymn arrangements that are lyrical, elegant, and faithful to the spirit of the originals, then these collections are well worth exploring.

Lead, Kindly Light Organ Book featuring fresh hymn arrangements with gentle jazz influences for organists.

Lead, Kindly Light Review

Discovering Marianne Kim’s Gentle Blend of Hymn and Jazz
Published on 23 July 2026 • Journal • Book Review

Sometimes a familiar hymn needs a fresh voice.

Every now and then, I come across a collection that quietly surprises me. Lead, Kindly Light by Marianne Kim is one of those books.

It doesn’t try to reinvent the great hymns of the church. Instead, it gently colours them with warm jazz harmonies and expressive textures that still feel completely at home in worship. The result is music that is both familiar and refreshingly new.

Whether you’re preparing a Sunday prelude, looking for Communion music, or simply enjoying an afternoon at the organ, this collection offers something special.

Inside the Collection

This volume includes beautifully arranged hymn settings for preludes and postludes, together with three original Communion meditations that may be played individually or as a longer suite.

Some of the hymn tunes you’ll discover include:

  • Amazing Grace (NEW BRITAIN)
  • Lead, Kindly Light (LUX BENIGNA)
  • Sweet Hour of Prayer
  • Were You There
  • I Want Jesus to Walk with Me
  • Something for Jesus

Each arrangement has Marianne Kim’s unmistakable style—warm, colourful, and full of gentle jazz influences without losing the character of the original hymn.

Why I Enjoy This Book

What I appreciate most is how naturally these arrangements sit under the hands. They sound sophisticated without feeling overcomplicated, making them enjoyable to practise as well as to perform.

The music has a calm, reflective quality that works beautifully for quieter moments in a service, yet it also has enough colour and movement to keep both the player and the listener engaged.

It’s one of those books I find myself returning to whenever I’m looking for something thoughtful and uplifting.

A Few Favourite Moments

One of my favourite settings in the collection is “Lead, Kindly Light” itself. The gentle harmonic language gives the hymn a peaceful, almost conversational character, making it especially suitable for reflective services.

I also enjoyed the Communion meditations, which provide a lovely opportunity to create a quiet atmosphere without requiring an extensive programme of music.

My Recommendation

If you enjoy hymn arrangements that are expressive, tasteful, and just a little different, I think you’ll enjoy this collection. Marianne Kim has found a beautiful balance between classical organ writing and gentle jazz harmony, creating music that feels both timeless and fresh.
